History of the
Hunting Lodge

The Spiegelsberge hunting lodge, affectionately known as the “Schlösschen” by locals, was built beginning in 1780 on behalf of Ernst Ludwig Christoph Freiherr von Spiegel zum Desenberg, the dean of Halberstadt Cathedral, and was inaugurated in 1782. Architecturally, the building features a blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The hunting lodge is part of the historic Spiegelsberge Landscape Park on the southern outskirts of Halberstadt. The park itself was established beginning in 1761, modeled after English landscapes, and is considered one of the earliest landscape gardens of its kind in Germany. It has been open to the public since 1771.

From the very beginning, the hunting lodge served as a prestigious venue within the estate and underwent numerous alterations and repairs throughout its history. Following periods of disrepair, extensive renovations and remodeling were carried out on and inside the hunting lodge, particularly in the 20th century. It was most recently used as a restaurant, then stood vacant for several years before undergoing extensive renovation in 2025–2026 and being ceremoniously reopened in September 2026 with a new concept.

Today, this historic building is part of the “Gartenträume” network in Saxony-Anhalt. With its historic architecture and prominent location on a hill in the heart of the Spiegelsberge Landscape Park, this charming event venue in Central Germany is truly one of a kind.

By the way…

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is said to have been a guest at the hunting lodge to meet his cathedral secretary and poet friend Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim. There is no definitive evidence of this, but the idea certainly has its charm.
